Eigentlich kann man sich nur dem anschließen, was sinngemäß schon im Booklet dieses 3-LP-Sets steht: jeder Versuch, diese Aufnahmen zu beschreiben, kann nur zum Understatement werden. Man findet nicht leicht zwei Figuren, die für die Geschichte des Jazz so bedeutend waren wie Ella Fitzgerald und Duke Ellington. Obwohl diese beiden über Jahrzehnte hinweg befreundet waren, gibt es nur wenige Aufnahmen mit ihnen zusammen, und dieser Livemitschnitt vom Antibe/Juan-les-Pins-Festival gehört definitiv zu den besten und hörenswertesten! Aufgenommen an vier aufeinander folgenden Konzertabenden gibt es hier alles zu hören, was man von „Ella & Duke“ erwarten kann und noch mehr: Ellas einzigartige Stimme, mal in zarten Balladen, mal in schwindelerregenden Up-Beat-Nummern, mal mit ihrem eigenen Trio, mal zusammen mit Ellingtons Orchester - und natürlich den gigantischen Big-Band-Sound, den man mit Ellington verbindet! Dazu noch eine tolle optische Aufmachung und ein ausführliches und reich bebildertes Booklet - was will man mehr?
